Weekly Response- Ann Arnett

In a portion of Suzanne Pharr’s “Homophobia,” she spoke of how some women are afraid to take on the ideas of feminism due to how society will see them. Often times, the ideas of feminism are twisted to mean something completely different than their original meaning. She speaks of how society has twisted these ideas, "... to work on behalf of women must mean to work against men. To love women must mean that one hates men." By identifying as a feminist, one will most likely be associated with the negative connotation that has been assigned to feminism. This means they could be called a raging man-hater or a lesbian, among other things. Men have used these terms to create a negative outlook towards feminist ideas to keep women from going against men. The definition of feminism has been clouded, so nobody really understands the term. This is meant to keep women in line and to let men be the leaders of the world. Due to this, women are afraid to embrace the ideas of feminism. A woman can easily believe in the ideas of feminism but refuse to call herself a feminist due to the negative connotation of the word. It is incredibly important for women to be educated about what a feminist really is and for. By educating others about the true meaning of feminism, we can rid the word of its negative connotation and stop living in fear of what will be thought of women if support it.
