Giving Gender to the Genderless

I had never considered it to great length in my youth but I’ve recently in my life discovered how bizarre and abstract the concept of Gender is. The idea that someone is expected to act a certain way and fulfill certain roles in society based on their biological sex is very strange to me. When society sees people in this “Gender Binary” traits of individuals start to become “Feminine” or “Masculine” which although these categories are very deeply connected to a society’s power structure, they can change and differ depending on culture and time period.

Biological sex and Gender are often distanced from each other but there are times where they are connected, like when intersex children are born and physicians ‘decide’ which gender to apply to the child so they can administer hormonal treatments to cause them to fit into the gender standards better. Additionally it’s very odd to think that when a child is born, before almost anything else is said- the doctors assign a gender to the child based on their physical traits. Even in certain languages objects and words are given genders- though the context and use of it is different the essence of assigning gender to that which is not inherently gendered is still there, which makes me wonder if there are other examples of applying gender to objects or concepts that I’ve never even noticed until now.
