Angry Lesbians All Around the World - Taylor Williams

The internet creates more exposure to feminist values. This is good because the mainstream tends to give misinformation. The "I'm not a feminist but..." people have been influenced by this media. Many people are afraid to identify as a feminist because of the stigma created by the people who believe women are not equal. As Valenti points out, to these people, "Being a woman is the ultimate insult" (Full Frontal Feminism, 7). Many people are hardcore feminists without realizing it. Capitalism and patriarchy are married with a joint bank account. Women's studies began at first as a way to try to change the way people think about feminism and history as told by men that many had accepted as the truth throughout the years. The women's movement came about to fight against injustices by trying to change laws and society's perspectives. Higher education was not available to women until the mid 19th century. Women of color still struggle for this right today, as schools are less likely to accept applicants with "black-sounding" names and the like. Men are more likely to believe feminism is unnecessary, and that women are too angry about the cause, or, as they believe, for no reason. There is much stigma around the word feminist despite the efforts of the movement to spread positive ideas. Girls are told they should not identify as a feminist because people will think they are man-hating, ugly, hairy, rage-filled lesbians. Although this stereotype may be true for some people, it is certainly not true for every feminist. Including women should not be interpreted as excluding men. Feminism is about equality,  not domination.
